Excerpt from Sacred Europe Preface...

There have been three primary reasons for my pilgrimage to the world's sacred sites. The first reason was to gather evidence showing that many pre-industrial cultures recognized the Earth to be a sacred being worthy of deep respect. Studying the development of sanctity at sacred sites, I realized that some ancient peoples had a reverential relationship with the living earth. If such a relationship can be reawakened and encouraged in our own times, we will be better able to address the crisis of worldwide ecological degradation.austria

The second reason for my travels was to photographically document the world's great sacred architecture before it is lost to the ravages of modernization and industrial pollution. Sacred architecture represents the most sublime example of humanity's artistic expression. Because of their outdoor locations, however, many of these great art pieces do not receive the protection, which paintings and sculpture receive in environmentally controlled museums. Through the international presentation of my photographs, I hope to stimulate increased public and government awareness of the value and fragility of these wondrous works of art.

The third reason was to study the miraculous phenomena reported at sacred sites around the world. There is indeed a density of holiness that saturates and surrounds the locality
roundtowersof the pilgrimage places, and this holiness, or field of energy, contributes to a variety of beneficial human experiences. The living earth has much to teach, and the ancient sacred sites are classrooms where this instruction is abundantly given.

Since 1984, I have explored the planet extensively gathering knowledge that, I believe, is significant to the well being of the earth and to humanity. During the past 30 years, I have communicated this knowledge by presenting slide shows to more than 125,000 people in the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia. In 1997, I started the web site SacredSites.com, and by 2012 over twenty-five million people had visited the site to view the photographs and read the accompanying essays. Additionally, my work has been featured in books, newspapers, magazines and documentaries around the world. In 2004 National lit.Geographic published a large book, Erlijioaren geografia, in which I was the principal photographer.

Sacred Europe, the first in the Sacred Earth: World Pilgrimage Guide series, is a visual meditation, a passionate prayer, and an expression of loving gratitude. My purpose in creating this book has been to share the teachings I received as a wandering pilgrim passionately in love with the earth.

Perhaps these words and photographs will inspire you to travel. Perhaps they will inspire you to love and respect this wonderful earth in new and meaningful ways — ways that open your own conscious awareness to the gifts of the planet to you and all beings. That is my hope and prayer, and my deepest intention in writing and creating this book.
